Why I went from “trying Veganism” back to “eating meat”

As most of you might already know, I love food. I love to eat, I love to cook and I love to show off the food. About four years ago, before having Andrea, I wanted to try Veganism. I wanted to apply it to my diet, the products I used and whatever else I could apply it to. The main reason I started was that of the culture shock I got when I came to live in Korea.

In Korea, there is a thing called BO SHIN TANG. It’s dog meat soup.

Yeap. You read it right, DOG MEAT. I can imagine how shocked you are right now, reading this because when I first heard and read about it, it was so shocking and it took me so many days to get myself out of the “feeling betrayed” mode. My heritage, my background, my ethnicity, my color, and my culture was eating DOG meat. That just blew me away and I was totally lost for words when I first found out.

Out of the three main types of meat that we eat, beef, pork, and chicken. I was always more along the beef and chicken line. I had watched documentaries about it and had heard so many different stories that I was becoming immune to it. It didn’t really matter to me. Then I read a blog about a Korean woman becoming Vegan and cooking vegan-Korean food. It was amazing. Right after finding that blog, I read an article about how much of the Korean population still eats DOG MEAT. I was so shocked. Then I saw a video about how they raise the dogs and what they do to them. It was just so terrifying and so disgusting. But then I thought to myself “that’s what they probably do to the other animals. That’s when I decided to take it one step at a time and try VEGANISM.

However, it really didn’t last that long. I am embarrassed to even say I tried. To tell you the main reason why I failed was because of the lack of IRON I was getting in my diet while being pregnant. When I had Josh my iron levels were below average. Way way way below. For example, if out of a scale of 10, 5 was the average, I was like – 2. That’s how low it was. Then while trying the veganism thing out, I got pregnant with Andrea and my iron levels were even lower. I had to get two iron supplement sessions by putting an IV on my arm and literally inserting iron into my body. The best way to get me back on my feet was to take iron supplements and eat red meat again.

It was hard at first. It felt like I was letting myself down. I didn’t know what else to do. Most of all, I had to do it for my baby. But deep inside, I didn’t want to. It was like I was fighting with myself. I knew I had to but I didn’t really want to. But after a couple of meetings with my Doc, it was the safest decision.

Now, I eat everything and anything (except for BO SHIN TANG that still disgusts me). I try and stick to a healthy diet and make sure I get all the nutrients I need. After having Tyler, my glucose levels also went back to normal (I had gestational diabetes when I had Tyler) and now I’m just watching what I eat and trying to get enough of everything. I do eat junk food on and off but recently I cut that off the list too cause of Tyler’s skin condition. I try and eat healthy meals every day, three times a day and make sure I get enough red meat and fish in my diet. It’s the only way I can stay sane and not go crazy or pass out.

It’s been a while but I still eat my big bowl of salads here and there. Although my diet includes meats, I try and stay away from anything that harms animals. Also known as environmental veganism. I’m trying that out. It’s not just for me but for my kids too. We try and make sure we think before we act and try and stay on terms with “not hurting earth”. Even though it’s something that just can’t be done overnight, Kaden and I have decided we try it and make sure our kids try it too.

Hopefully I won’t fail on this one like I did with my diet.
